Adiponectin is a hormone produced by fat cells. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, and insulin sensitizing properties. Low values indicate increased risk of diabetes and coronary heart disease and adiponectin levels are generally lower in obese individuals. Lifestyle modification and omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to increase adiponectin.
