When should I test hormones in saliva vs urine or vs serum?

Order Serum Hormones when you want baseline levels of endogenous hormones, when ordering other conventional labs (e.g., thyroid hormones), to establish an initial endocrine related diagnosis, and/or to monitor hormone levels with pellet, patch or oral HRT. Order Urinary Hormones when you want to know more about the metabolism and clearance of hormones as well as their related enzyme pathways. Order Saliva Hormones when you want to obtain tissue levels of bioavailable hormone, to monitor transdermal HRT, and/or to learn about diurnal cortisol and cortisone patterns.

For more information, see the Serum, Saliva, or Urine Comparison Sheet.
