Topical antifungals may have a pharmacological effect on reducing fungal growth, colonization, and infection. However, it is unknown whether the presence of topical antifungals in a stool sample will interfere with test performance. Test interference occurs when chemical compounds, materials, or agents interfere with the performance of a test, yielding an inaccurate result. Future research is needed to examine the effect of topical antifungals on stool microbiome profiling.
