Vibrant's Saliva Hormone test measures the bioavailable non-protein-bound fraction of circulating hormones that can freely diffuse into tissues. Saliva testing is the preferred method to measure cortisol levels. Saliva can accurately assess circulating hormones after administration of vaginal and pellet/intramuscular hormones. However, there may be some degree of overestimation compared to serum testing since it is measuring the free hormone levels. Saliva testing may also overestimate levels of hormones administered via troche/sublingual and topical routes due to direct contamination of oral mucosa and saliva. The degree of overestimation is dependent upon dose and timing of last dose of hormones administered and the individual’s unique biochemical response.
