What does it mean if methylmalonic acid (MMA) is below the reference range 6 to 14.9 nmol/ml?

For Laboratory Developed Tests (LDT), reference ranges are established by measuring values from healthy samples. When Vibrant developed the Micronutrient test, the methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels of healthy samples informed the reference range of 6 and 14.9 nmol/ml. If a patient’s MMA is below 6 nmol/ml, it means that the patient has lower levels of MMA than the group of healthy samples used to develop the reference range. Keep in mind, it is rare for someone to have low levels of methylmalonic acid. Additionally, low levels aren’t considered a cause for medical concern.
