What tests are recommended for sleep-related genetics?

Vibrant currently does not offer any sleep related genetic test. According to this Parish (2013),

There is no single sleep gene. Sleep is a complex phenotype involving a recurrent behavioral state, characteristic EEG changes, timing during the 24-h clock, and responses to deprivation. As such, sleep may be controlled or influenced by many genes—many still not yet defined.

They may consider the following genetic tests Vibrant does offer that may contribute to sleep issues:

  • Vibrant’s NutriPro panel is a test to measure levels of various genetic mutations present in an individual’s body along with the measure of the actual nutrient value in order to to look at SNPs related to genes that could affect nutrient status e.g. a deficiency or excess. Evidence has emerged that suggests a link between dietary/circulating micronutrients and sleep (Ji et al., 2017, Zhao et al., 2020).
  • Vibrant's CardiaX is the largest collection of genetic mutations and serological tests that provides potential risks for heart, metabolic, and vascular conditions. "Insomnia is linked to high blood pressure and heart disease. Over time, poor sleep can also lead to unhealthy habits that can hurt your heart, including higher stress levels, less motivation to be physically active, and unhealthy food choices" (CDC, 2021).
  • Vibrant's Methylation Panel indicates what key nutrients play a role in the methylation cycle, and, without optimal levels of these nutrients in the correct form, methylation can become impaired and dysfunctional, leading to illness, disease, and affecting your quality of life. "There is also substantial evidence linking the methylation status of circadian clock genes and sleep loss" (Gaine et al., 2018).
