HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 are heterodimers, meaning they are proteins made up of two different subunits.
In our assay, we measure HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQB1, and HLA-DRB1 variants together, which allows us to determine whether a patient carries the DQ2 or DQ8 heterodimer.
What we report, HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8, is the clinically meaningful interpretation of those underlying measurements. This is standard for celiac disease genetic risk reporting and is what providers need to assess whether a patient may be genetically predisposed to celiac disease.
Here is a publication with more detail on how these genes are used to determine heterodimer status, if helpful: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6502200/
